Apple just had its yearly event at the Steve Jobs Theatre in Cupertino. As is tradition, Apple managed to surprise everyone this year too. Previously it was believed that Apple is going to launch just two phones – iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, but they took everyone by surprise when they unveiled iPhone XR. Let’s see what was in store for us at the most awaited tech event of the year.
The new iPhones
Apple unveiled not one, not two, but three new phones. Let’s have a look at their specifications:
Processor
All three phones share the new A12 bionic chip – the first 7-nanometre chip in a smartphone. In theory, it can operate about 5 trillion operations in a second. That means not only your iPhone is going to be faster and smoother, but this also gives developers a chance to create more awesome things, without burdening the phone.
Camera
Both the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max come with a 12-megapixel dual camera in the back. These cameras come with new AI capabilities, which include Smart HDR and facial feature detecting also known as ‘facial landmarking’. The XR has almost the same quality camera with the same features but it is a 12-megapixel single camera, instead of a dual one. All three phones have a 7-megapixel front camera with Face ID.
Display
Apple went even further to remove the bezel from their new crop of iPhones. The XS and XS max come with the same screen as the iPhone X – a super-retina HD display. The difference is in the size. XS will come with a 5.8” screen, while the XS Max will have a 6.5” screen, making it the biggest iPhone ever. The XR will have a 6.1” Liquid Retina HD display, which is one of the major differences between these phones. Although, there’s no doubt the super-retina display is better, however, the liquid retina HD display isn’t far behind either. The iPhone XS and XS Max also have 3D touch, something that the XR lacks.
Body and other updates
All the new iPhones are water-resistant. Although the iPhone XS and XS Max are rated IP68, that means they are water-resistant to a maximum depth of 2 meters up to 30 minutes while the XR is IP67 rated and is water-resistant to a depth of 1 meter up to 30 minutes.
For the first time ever, the iPhones are going to come with dual-SIM capabilities. However, they will be available only in specific countries; which ones we’re yet to see.
XS and XS Max will come in silver, space grey and gold while XR will be more colourful and will come in 6 variants – blue, yellow, red, coral, white and black. The XS will come in 3 storage variants – 64 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB while the XR will have 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB variants.

The new Apple Watch
While arguably the most popular, the iPhones were only a part of Apple’s grand presentation. They had another quite impressive product lined up for this year. The new Apple watch is bigger, better and even a life-saver. The new Apple watch series 4 is available in 2 sizes – 40mm and 44mm – an upgrade to the previous series which came in 38mm or 42mm options. But that is just the beginning of it. The new Apple watch is now 50% louder and twice as fast. The speed upgrade comes from its new S4 dual-core 64-bit CPU.
With the new series 4 watch, Apple took health safety to the next level. The new watch has an ECG sensor built-in. What this means is that you can now take an actual electrocardiogram, available with complete rhythm classification. It also has a heart-rate monitor that can alert you if your health is at risk, or if your heart rate drops too low. And yes, it is FDA approved.
